Level 1 vs. Level 2 — the only choice that matters at home
Level 1 uses a standard 120-volt outlet: no install at all, but slow — a few miles of range per hour, fine for short commutes and plug-in hybrids. Level 2 runs on a 240-volt circuit like a dryer or AC unit and charges several times faster — a full overnight recharge for almost any EV. (Level 3 fast charging is commercial equipment; it does not belong in a garage.) Most Arizona EV households end up wanting Level 2, and Level 2 is where the electrical work begins.
Whether your panel can take it
A Level 2 charger typically wants a dedicated 40–60 amp circuit — a meaningful bite of a home’s electrical capacity, on top of the AC load an Arizona summer already demands. Older or fully-loaded panels may need a load calculation, a circuit rearrangement, or a panel upgrade before a charger can be added safely. A hardwired Level 2 install generally needs a permit and inspection — a licensed contractor handles that as part of the job, and it protects both your insurance and your resale story. Placement matters more here than most guides admit: garage heat is brutal on electronics, so shaded mounting and adequate clearance help the charger last, and cable reach should match where the car’s port actually parks. Buy a charger rated for our ambient temperatures — not every unit is.
The solar pairing
Charging from your own array is real, with one honest caveat: the sun is up when many commuters are at work. What makes the pairing genuinely work is knowing your production and usage patterns — scheduling charging into daylight hours where your lifestyle allows, or simply understanding what share of charging your array offsets.
