Once a homeowner decides to bird-proof a solar array, the hard part should be over. It is not — because bird guard installed wrong is genuinely worse than no bird guard at all. The shortcuts that ruin arrays
- Drilling or screwing into panel frames. The fastest way to attach mesh is also the fastest way to void a panel manufacturer’s warranty. Frames are structural and electrical components, not lumber.
- Skipping the cleanout. Screening over existing nests traps debris, droppings, mites — and sometimes birds — under the array. The heat, smell and wiring damage continue; now they are just harder to reach.
- Partial coverage. Pigeons need one gap. Corners, pipe penetrations, conduit runs and roof transitions are where cheap installs leave openings, and the flock finds them in days.
- The wrong material. Plastic netting sags and cooks brittle in Arizona sun; bare steel streaks rust down the roof. Chicken wire does both.
- New roof penetrations. A bird guard install should never add holes to your roof. Ever.
