How To Handle a Roof Repair When You Have Solar Panels

Roofs need repairs on their own schedule — a monsoon-lifted section, a slow leak, a run of cracked tiles — and when the trouble sits under the solar array, the repair cannot happen through a panel. Here is how the project actually works, and the two mistakes that cost people the most.

First: does the array actually need to move?

Not always. If the damage is on a roof plane the array does not occupy, your roofer works around it and the solar side of the project is zero. The array has to move when the repair area sits under or immediately around the panels — a good roofer will tell you honestly, and so will we from a photo.

If panels must come off: a partial detach & reset

The good news is that repairs rarely need the whole array down — often it is one section of panels and rail. The sequence mirrors a full re-roof project in miniature: the affected panels are safely de-energized, labeled and removed; the roofer makes the repair; the panels go back with every disturbed penetration flashed and re-sealed; and the system is re-commissioned and production-verified. Priced per panel — the same honest model as everything on our cost page — so a small repair carries a small solar bill.

The two expensive mistakes

  1. Letting the roofing crew move the panels. Solar is licensed electrical work: string voltage is live whenever the sun is up, and mishandled connectors, grounding and rapid-shutdown gear can void equipment warranties and create real hazards. Your roofer warranties the roof; a licensed solar contractor warranties the solar and the holes. Keeping those separate protects both warranties.
  2. Fixing the roof but not asking why it failed there. If the leak came from a solar penetration — a mount whose sealant gave up — patching the tile without re-flashing the mount treats the symptom. Our repairs re-seal the actual penetration, backed by our 100% money-back no-leak guarantee.

Insurance, and when it applies

If the roof damage came from a storm — monsoon wind, hail, a microburst — the repair may be a claim, and where the claim covers roof work that requires moving solar, the panel handling normally belongs in the scope. Document before anything is touched: wide photos, closeups, dates. Our estimates are written so an adjuster can approve them, and the storm & insurance guide walks the process. If the damage is wear-and-tear rather than storm, it is on you — which is exactly why catching it early via routine maintenance is the cheap path.

What a partial detach typically involves

Cost scales with the panel count touched: a two-panel lift-and-relay over a small repair is a fraction of a full detach & reset, while a whole-plane job approaches one. Timing matters more than people expect — the panels come off just before the roofer needs the area and go back as soon as the repair cures, so the system is rarely down more than a few days. And every disturbed penetration gets re-flashed and sealed under the same no-leak guarantee as our full resets — a repair should never create the next leak.

While the panels are off anyway

A partial detach is the cheap moment for the upgrades that are expensive on their own: bird guard on the exposed section, replacing tired mounts, or shifting panels off a plane that a new AC unit shades. We flag the options in the photo report; nothing happens without your written go-ahead. And if the “repair” conversation is drifting toward “this roof is done” — the full re-roof guide is the next read.
