What $299 buys — and what a cheap “inspection” skips

Technician on a residential solar array in Arizona verifying system performance
On the roof, meter in hand. If nobody left the ground, it was not an inspection.

Published industry figures put a real solar inspection between $250 and $450. Anything much cheaper is usually a visual look from the driveway or a drone pass — useful for photos, useless for the questions that matter: is the system producing what it should, will the inverter survive the next five years, and is water getting past any of the several dozen holes the array is bolted through.

Our $299 inspection puts a licensed technician on the roof and at the inverter: every accessible mount and its flashing, panels and wiring, grounding, the inverter tested under load, disconnects and labeling, ownership status, and measured production compared against what a system of that size should make in Arizona. You get a written, photo-documented report a buyer, lender, insurer or attorney can rely on — and a written repair estimate if anything needs attention, with no obligation.

Checked every year without thinking about it

The SolarCare Plan includes this same inspection twice a year — plus panel cleaning, a roof inspection, priority scheduling and 10% off repairs — for $500/year. Two standalone inspections would cost $598.

Questions people actually ask

Ours is $299 flat across Phoenix metro and Tucson, including the written photo report. Industry figures run $250–$450 for a genuine on-roof inspection; below that you are usually paying for a look from the ground. The Inspection + Solar Valuation Report is $500 total.
A licensed technician on the roof and at the inverter; inspection of mounts, flashing, panels, wiring, grounding, inverter, disconnects and labeling; measured production versus expected; ownership and paperwork status; and a written, photo-documented report with a repair estimate if anything needs attention. No obligation on the repairs.
The $299 stands on its own — that is what keeps the findings honest. We are not motivated to invent repairs to recover a free inspection. If we do repair something, SolarCare members get 10% off all work.
Everything in the inspection plus a Solar Valuation Report: a documented dollar value for the system, built on the PV Value® methodology (Appraisal Institute-endorsed; HUD and Fannie Mae accept its approaches), from measured production, condition, equipment age and utility rates. Used for listings, purchase negotiations, refinancing and installer disputes. There is a sample report on our inspection page.
Yes — it is one of the most common reasons we are called. We inspect and service every make and are manufacturer-certified for Tesla, Sunrun, SunPower, SMA, SolarEdge, Enphase and APS.
Effectively never. General home inspectors are not licensed to open inverters or combiners, do not measure production and rarely walk the array. Most reports explicitly exclude the solar system.
